2007 Burgans Albarino
90 points from the Wine Advocate. Here is their review: "The 2007 Burgans Albarino is light gold-colored with a sprightly nose of mineral, spring flowers, and lemon peel. Ripe, balanced, and concentrated, this is an ideal match for flaky fish courses. Drink it over the next 1-2 years. Burgans is a custom cuvee made for importer Eric Solomon. While it’s not the best Albarino on the market, in terms of bang for the buck, it has no challenger."
2005 Viña Maquis Lien
Think of this wine as a "Super Chilean" red blend. The Hutrado family has owned the vineyard for this wine for over a century and only recently decided to make wine from the best grapes of the vineyard. The distinctive 2005 Maquis Lien is made from a finely tuned blend of 38% Syrah, 32% Carmenere, 15% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, and 7% Malbec. It is a generous red wine that reflects the character of the Hurtado family’s special plot of land.
To make this fruity and concentrated blend, winemakers Ricardo Rivadeneira Hurtado and Alejandro Jofré have developed vines that bear no more than 12 bunches of grapes per vine. Only the ripest grapes are picked, then sorted by hand at the winery. The Lien is barrel aged for 12 months in French oak.
In Chile's native Mapuche language, lien means “silver metal”—a reference to colonial Spanish coins that were once melted to make fine jewelry, like the lizard on the Maquis label.
2006 La Spinetta Barbera Ca di Pian
We have had the 2003, 2004 and 2005 vintages of this wine at Bend Wine Cellar. Both were superb wines that sold out long before the next vintage was available. The 2006 is the best vintage of this wine we have had. It is loaded with ripe, forward fruit and has excellent structure that will enable it to last and improve for years. This is an excellent Barbera from a top producer from an excellent vintage. If you are a fan of Barbera from Piemonte, this is your opportunity to get some exceptional wine to drink now and to cellar.
